Death's Door (video game)
A crow reaper collects souls in a bureaucratic afterlife.
Death's Door is a 2021 action-adventure game from the two-person studio Acid Nerve, with Devolver Digital handling publishing. It launched for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in July 2021, then arrived on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 that November. A mobile version for Android and iOS, exclusive to Netflix subscribers, followed in December 2023. Critics generally received it well, highlighting its tight mechanics, straightforward design, and balanced challenge, often comparing it to *The Legend of Zelda* and *Dark Souls*. It is a follow-up to Acid Nerve’s earlier title, *Titan Souls*.
In the game, players control a small crow working as a reaper for the Reaping Commission Headquarters, a bureaucratic afterlife office. After a monster’s soul is stolen by an old crow, the protagonist must collect three Giant Souls from three dungeons to open Death’s Door. The story reveals that the bureaucracy was created when Death made a deal with the first Lord of Doors: process souls in exchange for extending the Lord’s life until a successor is appointed. The current Lord broke the pact by imprisoning Death behind the door to gain immortality, leading to a final boss fight and the dismantling of the system. A post-credits night mode lets players collect Tablets of Knowledge for a true ending involving an entity called Truth.
Gameplay is 3D and isometric, starting with a sword and a bow that recharges ammo through sword strikes. Four additional weapons and three magic projectiles become available, while health starts at four points (six on mobile) and is restored by planting seeds in pots found around the world. Death sends the player back to the nearest checkpoint door without losing progress. Souls, earned by defeating enemies and finding secrets, serve as currency to upgrade basic abilities. New items unlock previously inaccessible areas, and puzzles must be solved with available tools to complete dungeons.
Development was led by Mark Foster (programming, design, writing, animation) and David Fenn (production, design, composition, sound), with help from two concept artists and a modeler. The team aimed to build on ideas from *Titan Souls* while creating a more polished experience, drawing inspiration from *The Legend of Zelda*, *Dark Souls*, and Studio Ghibli. The game was about halfway done when the COVID-19 pandemic began, forcing the te

Lore & Background
Death's Door is a 3D, isometric action-adventure game. The player starts with a sword and bow and arrow; sword strikes string together into combos and ammo for the bow is replenished by using the sword. Four other weapons and three magic projectiles become available as the game progresses. The player has four health points (six in the mobile version), with all damage causing one to be depleted. Health is recovered by collecting and planting seeds in pots which appear throughout the world. Doors to and from the afterlife area exist as checkpoints; when the player dies, they respawn at the nearest door without otherwise losing progress. New items and abilities allow access to new areas in previously explored levels, and solving puzzles with available tools is required to complete dungeons. The game uses souls as a currency, collected by killing enemies and finding secret pick-ups, which can be used to upgrade basic abilities.
