Lore & Background
Darksiders III takes place parallel to the first Darksiders game. Players control Fury, a mage and sister of War and Death, as she hunts the Seven Deadly Sins, which have escaped imprisonment. The game features a continuous environment with exploration, simple puzzles, and platforming obstacles. Fury uses whips, swords, flails, daggers, and magic, and can take on elemental forms to enhance combat. Enemies are stronger but appear in smaller numbers than in previous games, and the combat is more methodical, removing the hit counter and gated combat.
Reader's Guide
The game's significance lies in its shift in gameplay direction for the series, borrowing structure from Metroidvanias and Soulslikes while retaining the Darksiders setting and lore. It received mixed reviews, with critics noting technical issues and bugs on both PC and console versions, as well as simplistic combat and puzzle systems. The development team largely consisted of former Vigil Games employees, who had worked on the first two Darksiders titles. The game was published by THQ Nordic after the franchise was purchased from the bankrupt THQ in 2013. Its legacy includes expanding the series' narrative by focusing on a new Horseman and introducing a more interconnected, exploration-focused world.
